Después de la quema
Ceramics begin with a transformation. Before entering the kiln, clay still retains the possibility of going back: it can be moistened, deformed, and reshaped. Fire interrupts that possibility. After the firing process, the material has changed its condition. It becomes something else: more stable and, at the same time, more fragile; capable of enduring for centuries, but also of breaking in an instant.
Después de la quema stems from that transformation, bringing together works by artists from different generations who approach ceramics not only as a technique, but also as a territory in which images, bodies, objects, and forms of memory converge. Some emerge directly from modeling and the kiln; others approach ceramics through drawing, installation, or the transformation of materials. In Colección de totems, by Carlos Alfonso, for example, ceramics is not present as a material; instead, it emerges through drawing, in a series of forms that allude to the object, the vessel, and the figure. This distance between material and representation expands the presence of ceramics beyond what has passed through fire and allows us to think of it also as a form that moves between different languages.
Between permanence and fragility, Después de la quema invites us to consider what happens when matter crosses a point of no return: what fire transforms, what form preserves, and what, after both, still remains.
