Painting Intimacy

The paintings brought together in this exhibition reveal Ethel Gilmour's (1940–2008) interest in domestic spaces and intimate scenes. Created around 1970, they distill that interest through seemingly simple subjects: a chair accompanied by everyday objects, an interior seen from the bedroom, a figure smoking at a table with flowers, or a body reclining beside small elements of daily life.

Far from constructing explicit narratives, Gilmour oers fragments of experience. Her compositions place the viewer before familiar situations where objects, color, and human presence generate a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. The loose brushwork and modest scale reinforce a sense of closeness, as if each painting were a lingering observation of a private moment.

In these interiors, the domestic appears not as a mere backdrop, but as a space of memory, aection, and attention. Painting thus becomes a means of recording the intensity of the everyday. Text by Pavel Vernaz
