Respuestas a una época: María Teresa Hincapié 1987-2006

Collecting photographic and video documentation of the actions performed throughout a nineteen year period and material from unpublished archives, the exhibition begins from an exhaustive revisal of Hincapié´s personal archive, with the goal of amplifying the voice and the viewpoint of an artist that dedicated her life and body to the search of that what is sacred from the simplest of acts such as walkingbreathingsowingcleaning, and organizing.  Through a practice devoid of theoretical discourses or structures, and which in an intuitive manner turned towards silence and contemplation.  Hincapié was able to construct a point of view that criticized the prevailing pragmatism in consumerist society, defended nature and recovered that what was forgotten

Using only her body dressed in a very simple black garmentabsolutely slow movementsan empty space with concrete floor and a small quantity of patches of living grass that grew in the joints and corners of the floor, María Teresa Hincapié created Divina Proporción (Divine Proportion) (1996), her second Salon Nacional de Artistas de Colombia.  When looking at it from the light of our new realityDivina Proporción, emotional and intense, is strengthen in its relevance and meaning, and it places itself as the main piece of the exhibition.  At the same time, she suggests to remember a series of values that transverse her performances.  Hincapié reminds us that pauses and solitude drive us to conscientiousnessthat the austere is synonymous with beautythat the congruence between humans and the environment is essentialthat the damage to Mother Earth generates an imbalancethat walking is a powerful tool of knowledgethat everyday life can become a revealing ritual, and that the search for what is sacred allows us to find a sense to life.

Looking for a way out of a format of historical exhibition where strict chronology is essentialthe work puts Hincapié´s viewpointher values and life practices, in the center of the discussion, at the same time it presents a selection of her actions as a series of answers or “elucidated criticism that serve as a guide to those who come close to them.
