In Alex Rodríguez’s work there is always an interest in reality as a cultural issue so as an individual order. He’s interested in aspects such as places, characters, or situations that constitute those ideas of reality on a daily basis. Looking for materials that are related to culture and thus can stand for the reality in which they worked before becoming part of his pieces pieces. For example, the use of paper flyers as a medium, or the residue and the object, are sometimes assembled as part of the material remains of a place. The materials he uses have the quality of being from a real place, from daily life. He approaches images as residues too. He uses simple and meaningful images that come from different investigations; drawing, painting, photography are traditional media which appear in most of his works.

“I am interested in reality as a cultural issue and as an individual construct. People, places and situations that constitute this day-to-day reality intrigue me.  I am particularly interested in approaching reality through the exploration of specific themes such as the House, the School and the City as sinister social structures.

I search for materials that not only reference culture but also show traces of their original context. In so doing, I construct simple yet poignant images that come from various research processes. Traditional media like drawing, painting and photography are all essential in my practice. In addition, I have recently become interested in the technique of collage as a form of reality and as a working mechanism based on the superimposition of layers.”
