Gabriel Sierra: CCS Bard
Living Under the Same Roof: The Marieluise Hessel Collection and the Center for Curatorial Studies
Living Under the Same Roof is the public part of a process of looking into the Marieluise Hessel Collection with the students of CCS Bard. The exhibition will present a mapping of the entire collection – developed in collaboration with Paris-based Brazilian artists Angela Detanico and Rafael Lain – in an attempt to open up, to an interested audience, variable ways of entering the collection. The public will be able to choose works from storage which will be seen in a viewing room in the museum space. The works will be displayed in a rotating system, according to the audience’s weekly requests.
In addition, the exhibition will focus on the artist’s books collection (including works by Marcel Broodthaers, Joseph Kosuth, Robert Smithson, and contemporary artists like Gabriel Orozco and Rosangela Rennó), and on the time-based media works (film, video or audio works by Joan Jonas, Christian Marclay, among others). The display of the exhibition – developed in collaboration with Bogota-based artist Gabriel Sierra – will function as an apparatus to articulate the specificities of each artwork and its relations to the audience. A series of talks with artists whose works are in the collection is a vital component of the program. The opening day will feature a conference about particular ways to collect and display artistic practices in contemporary art museums. Curated by CCS Bard curator in residence, Ana Paula Cohen. Opening reception: Saturday, February 20, 1:00 – 5:00 pm.
