“Creyendo en fantasmas” (Believing in ghosts), the solo show of the young artist Angélica Teuta, is made of four projects of a mysterious and phantasmagoric nature, which manifest the artist´s fascination for the use of light, space and mechanic devices.
Based on photographic thinking and nurturing itself on elements of cyberspace, on different branches of design and architecture, the work of this 24 year old artist deals with concepts of perception, optics, illusionism, memory and ambience.
“Decoración para espacios claustrofóbicos” (Decoration for claustrophobic spaces)
is one of the four projects of the show, where simulations of windows are built with light projectors, displaying movement mechanisms and restoring a claustrophobic space in order to make it enjoyable and lively.
Another clever project is titled “Mirador” (Viewing point), where the artist
re-appropriates the popular “View-Master” toy to create her own design. In the stereoscopic vision toys created by Teuta, three-dimensional images
- all hand-made – of woods, the cosmos and the unknown core of the earth are displayed.
In the series “Instalaciones Eléctricas” (Electrical Installations), the artist creates interesting dialogues between photography and sculpture, object and space, by making installations or magical machines out of boxes that contain ordinary objects. By their mechanisms based on old photographic techniques, these objects project their own images in space, misleading the spectator with their “ghostly presence”.
“Creyendo en fantasmas” (Believing in ghosts) displays a variety of installations where visual apparitions, transformations and disparitions are manifest thanks to different simple mechanisms used by the artist. Besides from being a show where illusionism, light and space are made protagonists, the new work by Teuta achieves to relive in the spectator´s mind, reminiscences of childhood.
Angélica Teuta, born in Medellín in 1985, attended the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. She has had solo shows in Bogotá, Cali and Medellín. Standing out from them is the “Decoración para espacios claustrofóbicos” (Decoration for claustrophobic spaces) for Galería La Vitrina, independent space Lugar a Dudas, Cali (2009) and “Recámaras” (Chambers), an in-situ installation in the artist´s house in La Macarena, Bogotá (2007). Her work has been in group shows such as “Desdoblamiento” (Unfolding), at Artecámara, Proyecto de Investigación Jóvenes Artistas, ARTBO, Bogotá (2008); “Instalaciones Eléctricas” (Electrical Installations), La Otra Art Fair, Antigua Litografía Canal Ramírez Antares, Bogotá (2007). This year Teuta will participate in the international artist residency “Consonancias” which will take place in Sao Paulo, Brasil.
