Casas Riegner is pleased to announce the opening of “El tercer Estado y el principio de la acción”, an exhibition of new work by emerging Colombian artist Liliana Sánchez.
“El tercer Estado…” features photographs, drawings and videos containing highly suggestive images serving as insistent reminders of how we carry out the act of looking. Oscillating between figuration and abstraction, Sanchez’s imagery ultimately attempts to challenge and question the viewer’s perception of reality.
Central to Sanchez’s new body of work are two fundamental concepts running parallel to each other. On the one hand, the exhibition investigates the essential nature of a physical body and how it can occasionally loose its form consequently manifesting the abstract nature of its structure. On the other hand “El tercer Estado” (The Third Estate) alludes to the peasants, the working class, the masses which in Sanchez’s work, are plainly apprehensible in the numerous elements that when grouped together to form a body, loose their individuality, hence their identity.
Besides exploring the transmutative character of nature, “El tercer Estado…” is an invitation to look beyond the surface of images, of visually powerful images capable of arousing all sorts of questions.
Liliana Sánchez born in 1979 in Bogotá, studied Fine Arts at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia.
