The well-known Latin-American artist Liliana Porter will be exhibiting her latest work at Casas Riegner Gallery on Thursday November 24, 2005. Porter, born and raised in Argentina (Buenos Aires, 1941) has lived in New York for the past 40 years and is now returning to Colombia to showcase a variety of works in different media; painting, photography, installation and video.
Liliana Porter´s name stands out strongly within the contemporary Latin American art milieu. Her work has been included in some of the most important private and public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Daros Collection in Zurich, and the Constantini Collection in Argentina amongst others. Porter´s prominence is such, that a retrospective exhibition is currently touring different Latin American countries. In addition, her work has been reviewed in some of the most prestigious art publications around the world.
Porter is well-known for the variety of images she employs as well as for combining different techniques in a single work. By doing so, Porter explores the boundaries between reality and representation as well as the concept of time, thereby attempting to confuse the spectator. Her work could be translated into a series of situations in which time and space are nonexistent; these come to life through the contrast of objects and images in different media, in which the artist’s touch is often difficult to decipher. At times the obscurity and confusion is such that she even titled one of her series “In Chinese”; the title alludes to our inability to grasp the essence of things.
During the 90’s Porter began using children’s toys which since then have become a staple of her work. With imagination, Porter constructs scenes with different ceramic or plastic figurines in an attempt to create improbable meetings and dialogues. Such unexpected scenes could include a Chinese ceramic figurine conversing to a teapot, or an eagle chatting to her own mirror reflection! These are only a few of the scenes featured in “Dialogue with Teapot and Others” which we will be able to appreciate and dwell upon.
It is a real honor for Casas Riegner Gallery to include Liliana Porter, an artist of such stature within our international artists program.
